Derek graduated from the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Law after studying philosophy at the University of Winnipeg.  While in law school, Derek particularly enjoyed studying torts, real estate law, construction law, and the various advocacy courses he took.  He worked for several years towards his journeyman carpentry certification, up to his fourth level, prior to beginning his university studies.  He has worked on a wide variety of jobs, ranging from residential renovations and new home construction, to major commercial and industrial construction projects throughout the city and province.  Though he now more often wields a pen than a hammer, his experience and expertise provide him with a unique perspective into the operations and challenges of an industry where, as he learned early on, "everything matters".

Personal Interests and Hobbies

Derek is by nature very much a hobbit.  He enjoys time at home with his family immensely, gardening, reading, cooking and entertaining.  He would however be considered one of the more adventurous ones (like the ones in the books), as he enjoys travelling a great deal, and considers that there is nothing better than spending time out in nature; he is often found on various camping or hiking expeditions with his family.  He enjoys keeping active and can often be found cross-country skiing or cycling, depending on the season, and tries to keep his carpentry skills from getting too rusty with various woodworking projects when he has the time.
